1. General

      1.1  All participants of the ASTAR SCRABBLE CHALLENGE INTERNATIONAL (ASCI) 2022 hereby agree to be bound by and adhere to the                 Terms and Conditions ASCI 2022, whereby failure to adhere to any of these rules by the participant, will result in the disqualification                   from the ASCI 2022 by the ASCI 2022 Committee (“the Committee”) with the discretion of the Academic and Intellectual Development                 Committee, First Residential College, University of Malaya ("the Organizer").

      1.2  The Organizer reserves the right to –

             (a) amend, add and/or revoke any of the Terms and Conditions without prior notice at any time before, during and after ASCI 2022;                 (b) modify, suspend, cancel and/or terminate ASCI 2022 without any prior notice;

             (c) modify, suspend cancel and/or terminate ASCI 2022 in the event of technical interference or corruption due, but not limited, to                         computer viruses, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond the control of the                             Organizer;

             (d) disqualify participants in the event the participants or any acquaintances of the participants are found or suspected to have tampered

                 with ASCI 2022 during the operation of ASCI 2022;

             (e) disqualify participants in the event the participants or any acquaintances of the participants are found or suspected to have violated

                  the Tournament Rules & Regulations ASCI 2022 during the operation of ASCI 2022; and

             (f) disqualify and/or take legal action against any person found or suspected to have interfered or conducted fraudulent activities during

                 ASCI 2022.

 

2. Gameplay

     2.1  Participants hereby agree to be bound by and adhere to the Tournament Rules & Regulations of ASCI 2022.

     2.2  Coordinating teachers, parents and guardians are prohibited from giving any advice and guidance to the participants during the                        tournament.

     2.3  For the Under-12 Category, one parent or guardian may accompany the participant during the Briefing Session and tournament to                      provide technical assistance to the participant in the event technical issues arise.

3. Eligibility

     3.1  ASCI 2022 is open to people from all over the world.

     3.2  It is not material whether the Applicant has been or has not been rated by World English Language Scrabble® Players Association                      (WESPA) and Malaysian Scrabble Association (MSA).

     3.3  Under-12 Category is open to Applicants born between 1/1/2010 and 31/12/2016.

     3.4  Under-15 Category is open to Applicants born between 1/1/2007 and 31/12/2009.

     3.5  Under-18 Category is open to Applicants born between 1/1/2004 and 31/12/2006.

     3.6  Open Category is open to Applicants of all ages.

     3.7  All Applicants shall be equipped with the following during the competition from 21st May 2022 to 22nd May 2022:

            a. Functionable laptop or desktop with camera or webcam;

            b. Functionable phone or electronic gadget with camera; and

            c. Stable network connection.

            The Organizer shall not be responsible for the failure on the part of participants in using a functionable laptop or desktop with camera or

            webcam, functionable phone with camera, and stable network connection.

     3.8  All participants shall attend the Online Briefing Session on the date and time according to their categories as shown in Table 1-

     3.9  All participants shall attend the Trial Run Session on the date and time according to their categories as shown in Table 2-

     3.10  Failure to attend Online Briefing Session and Trial Run Session without a reasonable excuse and prior notice to the Committee at least

              seven days in advance will result in the disqualification of the participant.

     3.11  All participants shall create an account on Woogles and set their username as their full name. For participants who have an existing

              account, they are required to inform their Caretakers of their username. All participants are required to play at least 15 games on         

              Woogles, “screenshot” their “Game History” as evidence and send it to their respective Caretakers via Telegram by 6th May 2022 at

              12PM (MYT).

 

4. How to enter

     4.1  Interested Applicants may visit ASCI 2022 website (http://www.asciscrabble.com/) and fill in the Registration Form starting from 7th  n              March 2022 12.00am until 31st March 2022 at 11.59PM

     4.2  Applicants will receive a payment request email from the Committee (asci.scrabble@gmail.com) and shall make the payment of the                      registration fees in accordance with the Guidance on Payment of Registration Fee by the designated date as stated in the payment                      request email.

     4.3  After completion of payment, Applicants will receive a confirmation email from the Committee within 2 days and only then will the                      registration be deemed accepted and valid.

     4.4  The Organizer reserves the right to reject incomplete registrations.

 

5. Registration fees

​     5.1  Registration fees for each category are as shown in Table 3-

6. Judging and Notification of Winners

     6.1  ASCI 2022 will be conducted and overseen by the ASCI 2022 Committee from the University of Malaya, Malaysia.

7. Prizes

     7.1  All participants and coordinating teachers will earn a virtual participation certificate.

     7.2  For the Under-12 category, the top 20 winners will be awarded with a virtual achievement certificate and a prize. For the Under-15

            category, the top 15 winners will be awarded with a virtual achievement certificate and a prize. For the Under-18 and Open category,

            the top 10 winners will be awarded with a virtual achievement certificate and a prize. They are as shown in Table 4

     7.3  After the closing ceremony, the Committee will approach the winners to inform them of the procedure to claim the prize on E-PAY@UM.

     7.4  The winners will receive the prize within one month provided that they follow the procedure to claim the prize.

8. Disqualification

     8.1  Before the tournament, participants may be disqualified due to failure to comply with Sections 3.8, 3.9 and 3.10.

            a. During the tournament, participants may be disqualified in the event of-

            b. Dropping out of Zoom call without prior indication that they are returning;

            c. Dropping out of OBS Ninja Break-Out room without prior indication that they are returning;

            d. Not being “online” on Woogles 10 minutes before the commencement of each round;

            e. Not complying with the instructions of the Committee and established game format;

            f. Cheating;

            g. Not responding to the Committee during the tournament;

            h. Disrespectful behavior throughout the tournament, that is either determined by the Invigilator or reported by another participant; and

            i. In any other situations as provided in Tournament Rules and Regulations ASCI 2022.

 

9. Refund

     9.1  In the event ASCI 2022 gets cancelled or terminated, every participant will get a refund of the registration fee provided that every                       participant carries out the refund procedure precisely under the guidance of the Committee.

10. Data protection

     10.1  Any personal data relating to the participants will be used solely for matters related to ASCI 2022 and will not be disclosed to any                      third parties without the individual’s prior consent.

     10.2  Participation in this tournament and acceptance of the prizes constitute an irrevocable permission for the Organizer to use the winners’                names and photographs for the purposes of publicity and advertisement without any compensation or need for prior notification to the                winners.

Rules and Regulation

All participants of the ASTAR INTERNATIONAL SCRABBLE CHALLENGE (ASCI) 2022 must agree to abide by the Tournament Rules and Regulations ASCI 2022.

1. Game Format

     1.1  Rules: WESPA Rules Version 4.0

     1.2  Lexicon: CSW 21 (Collins Scrabble Dictionary Edition 2021)

     1.3  Players per round: 2

     1.4  Total rounds for each category:

            a. Open Category: 14

            b. Under-18 : 13

            c. Under 15 : 13

            d. Under 12 : 13

     1.5  The maximum time for each round is 30 minutes. Each player is allocated 15 minutes. 10 points will be deducted for each extra minute,              the game will end 1 minute after the time allocated for the participant is up.

     1.6  Pairing system:

            a. Participants will be assigned an opponent by ASTAR Scrabble Challenge International 2022 Committee (“the Committee”).

            b. Participants, after the pairing is released and when cued by the Committee, shall match with their assigned opponent on Woogles                      (https://woogles.io/).

            c. King of the Hill tournament style is adopted, during which all players will be paired with opponents with a similar number of game                      points (established once one round has been played).

            d. There will be a 300-point spread cap per game.

            e. In the event 2 players end a round with the same number of game points and cumulative spread, their rankings will be determined by
               Woogles based on the final ranking of their opponents from the games of that round. The player whose past opponents have the
               higher final ranking will be awarded with a higher position.

 

2. Before the game

     2.1  Participants shall log in to their accounts on Woogles 10 minutes before the stipulated commencement time of the game and remain                    logged on throughout the competition.

     2.2  Participants will be assigned into different OBS Ninja Break-Out rooms. Participants shall enter the OBS Ninja Break-Out room 10                      minutes before the stipulated commencement time of the game, failure to do so will deem the participant absent and may result in                        automatic disqualification from that round.

     2.3  Participants will also be assigned a link to Zoom. Participants shall enter the Zoom room once they receive the link from the Committee                and stay in the room until the end of the day. This is to facilitate any sudden enquiries throughout the competition.

 

​3. During the game

     3.1  Participants shall stay in the OBS Ninja Break-Out room until the end of the game, failure to do so will result in forfeiture of that round.

     3.2  Participants shall keep the camera and audio on, in the Break-Out room on laptop, in accordance with the instructions of the Committee              throughout the game and must respond to the Invigilator immediately upon his/her request.

     3.3  Participants may disable the camera and audio in the Zoom room during the game.

     3.4  Participants are not allowed to leave their seats for any reasons during the game.

     3.5  Participants are not allowed to have any sort of aid during the competition.

     3.6  No other electronic gadgets, dictionary and/or any other persons are allowed to be in the same room as the participant, except for                    participants of the Under-12 category, who are allowed to have one guardian next to them throughout the game.

     3.7  Participants may leave the OBS Ninja Break-Out room and Zoom room during the buffer time between each round of game. However,                Section 2 of the Tournament Rules and Regulations ASCI 2022 must be strictly complied with.

     3.8  Failure to adhere to any of the rules and regulations provided in Section 3 will result in forfeiture of that round of game.

4. Scrabble Rules

     4.1  Woogles will decide which player goes first.

     4.2  Points collected by each player will be counted automatically by the system.

     4.3  Timer will automatically start counting during your turn.

     4.4  Once participants have made their play, they are required to click “PLAY”, which will stop their timer and start the opponent’s timer.

     4.5  Participants will not be able to pause their timer during the games.

     4.6  After their plays have been made, the computer will fill the participants’ rack with a random drawing of tiles.

     4.7  Participants may exchange tiles by clicking the button “EXCHANGE”. Participants can decide the number of tiles to be exchanged.                      Exchanging tiles counts as a play, this will start the timer of their opponents.

     4.8  In the event participants do not want to make a play or exchange tiles, they may choose to pass by clicking the button “PASS” and give              up that turn, this will start the timer of their opponents.

     4.9  Participants may challenge a play made by their opponents by clicking the button “CHALLENGE”. Woogles will automatically check the              validity of the word.

            a. For each category of players, if the word is invalid (Challenge successful)​​, it will automatically be taken out from the board and the                     player who put down the invalid word will automatically lose a turn;

            b. If the word is valid (Challenge unsuccessful),

                i. For categories Under-12, Under-15 and Under-18, no penalty will be given to the challenger; and

               ii. For the Open Category, if the word is valid, the opponent will be awarded 5 points.

      4.10  Participants are prohibited from resigning once the game has started except in accordance with the instruction of the Committee.

      4.11  The game will only end in the following events –

               a. One of the participants has no tiles remaining and there are no tiles to be drawn from the bag;

               b. At the instruction of the Committee; or

               c. 6 consecutive 0 scores (due to passes or exchanges).
